Care & Maintenance

A good rule of thumb is never to use anything you wouldn’t use on your hands.  Here are some recommendations for routine care and cleaning:

Since granite is a low maintenance material, caring for your granite surfaces is really quite easy.

Most granite surfaces require they only be cleaned with a soft cloth or some hot water and dish soap. With simple care and maintenance granite will look beautiful for decades.

  • Clean stone surface with a few drops of a mild liquid dishwashing detergent diluted in a gallon of warm water.  Thoroughly rinse and dry the surface with a micro-fiber cloth after washing.
  • Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks.  If this happens, clean up excess soapy film with clear, warm water and a clean sponge or rag.
  • Do not use cleaning products that contain lemon, citrus, vinegar or other acids on the granite.
  • Do not use scouring powders or liquids; these products contain abrasive chemicals or ammonia that may damage the finish.
  • Don’t use cleaners that contain ammonia such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tub and tile cleaners.
  • If you need to scrub surface, a plastic scouring pad/sponge, some warm water and some good old-fashioned elbow grease works wonders.  You can even use steel-wool for extreme scouring jobs, with normal hand pressure.  It will not scratch the granite surface, but be sure to re-apply some sealer to that area as soon as conveniently possible.
  • If you have a spill on your solid surface top containing wine, lemon juice, harsh cleaners, vegetable oil or vinegar blot the spill with a paper towel immediately.  Don’t wipe the area, it will spread the spill.  Rinse this area with clean water several times.  Dry the area with a soft cloth.  Repeat as necessary.

At the time we installed your stone we applied a sealer.  Depending on the color of the stone, a sealer should be applied routinely.  Dark colored stones should be sealed every 2 years, lighter colored stones every 18 months.  Stones that are located outside should be sealed every year.  Sealing the stone is a very simple job that generally takes about 15 minutes to apply and can be done by the homeowner.  If you would like us to come and reseal your granite, contact us for a quote at 989-775-2852.
